Wyoming’s Safest Cities of 2024

According to our most recent State of Safety report, Wyomingites feel safer in their state and worry less about crime and safety than almost all other Americans. Wyoming respondents expressed nearly half the average for daily concern about crime and safety (27% who worry about it daily versus 47% nationwide). The state (and its safest cities) also boast consistently low crime rates.

We didn't have enough viable data to calculate statewide crime rates for Wyoming this year. But if the safest cities are any indication, it looks like crime rates may be on the decline statewide.

The collective violent crime rate of the five safest cities is 1.4 incidents per 1,000 people—down from 1.6 last year. For property crime, the safest cities report 10.2 incidents per 1,000 people—down from 11.8 last year.

Last year, we reported Wyoming's per capita crime rates as 2.4 for violent crime and 18.6 for property crime, which are slight increases year over year.

Concern about property crime in Wyoming fell this year from 45% to 43% who worry about it happening to them. The state has the fifth-lowest concern about property crime and the lowest concern about crime and safety in general, among all 50 states. Despite low concern, Wyoming uses more security measures than most other states.

• 7 in 10 Wyoming residents (70%) reported feeling safe in their home state (US 45%)—second only to North Dakota.
• Reported experience with property crime rose 8% this year, from 25% to 27% who said they had a run-in during the 12 months prior to the survey (US 27%).
• 80% of Wyoming residents use some form of property protection (US 75%) with firearms on top at 53%, followed by a guard dog (44%).
• 28% of Wyomingites said they added or increased security measures in the 12 months prior to the survey (US 35%).

• 33% of survey respondents in Wyoming reported experiencing package theft in the 12 months prior to the survey (US 35%).
• 38% of participants expressed a high level of concern about package theft—the lowest concern in the nation (US 53%).
• 6 in 10 Wyoming respondents told us they don't do anything to protect their packages.
• Among those who do try to thwart porch pirates, the preferred method of package protection in Wyoming is video doorbells (23%).

Reports of personal experience with violent crime in The Cowboy State shrank from 13% to 10% year over year (US 15%). The state also has the lowest level of concern for both violent crime and gun violence.

• Wyoming has the seventh lowest reported experience with violent crime, reporting 34% fewer personal experiences than the national average in our survey.
• Respondents expressed the lowest level of concern about violent crime, with only 24% saying they are worried about it on a daily basis (US 50%).
• 55% of survey participants use some kind of personal protection like a stun gun or pepper spray, compared to 36% nationally.
• The most popular types of personal protection used by Wyoming respondents this survey year were concealed firearms (55%), pocket knives (42%), and pepper spray (38%).

• 26% said gun violence is the safety concern they worry about most on a daily basis—14% lower than last year and the lowest concern among all states (US 53%).
• The number of respondents with a personal gun violence experience (9%) held steady year over year (US 12%).
• There were 0 mass shooting incidents in Wyoming in the last 5 years.
• Wyoming respondents rely on firearms for protection more than most Americans, with 55% carrying concealed firearms (US 41%) and 53% using them for home security (US 28%).

For the purposes of this report, the terms “dangerous” and “safest” refer explicitly to crime rates as calculated from FBI crime data—no other characterization of any community is implied or intended.

• 13 cities met criteria to be considered for ranking.
• Jackson debuts on our ranking as the safest city in Wyoming. Jackson reported the fewest violent crimes overall, with 8.
• Green River is another newcomer, debuting at number 5. There were no robberies reported in Green River.
• Cody held onto the third spot for the second consecutive year. Cody's property crime rat dripped from 10.8 incidents per 1,000 last year to 8.7.
• Douglas is the only city on our list to report zero murders, rapes, and robberies.
• The violent crime rate in the safest cities is 1.4 incidents per 1,000 people—60% lower than the national rate (4.0).
• The property crime rate in the safest cities is 10.2 incidents per 1,000 people— 51% lower than the national rate (20.7).
